The project comprising a 19.7 MW installed-capacity solar power plant and a 19.2 MW / 48.8 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was successfully implemented to supply a portion of the internal electricity demand of the MAK Euro Cement Plant with renewable energy. Pursuant to Order No. A/59 of the Minister of Energy of Mongolia, dated 2026, the State Commission for the permanent commissioning of the facility conducted its inspection on 21 April 2026, after which the plant was accepted for permanent operation and connected to the power grid. The project owner was MAK Cement LLC, while Shugam LLC acted as the design consultant. Huawei Technologies LLC (Foreign-Invested Company) and HMN Smart Co., Ltd. served as the general and main contractors, and G-Power LLC participated as a subcontractor. The primary objective of the project is to supply a defined portion of the plant’s electricity demand with solar energy, reduce the amount of electricity and peak power demand drawn from the Integrated Power System, lower electricity costs, diversify energy sources, and ultimately reduce carbon emissions associated with industrial operations. The 19.2 MW / 48.8 MWh BESS installed under the project plays a critical role in mitigating fluctuations in solar power generation, increasing the utilization of renewable electricity, reducing the plant’s power demand from the grid during peak-load periods, and supporting the stable and reliable operation of the plant’s electricity supply system. Electricity generated by the solar power plant is primarily used directly for the internal consumption of the MAK Euro Cement Plant. Surplus electricity and available energy generated during lower-demand periods can be stored in the battery energy storage system and supplied back to the plant when required. This arrangement enables greater utilization of solar energy while reducing both electricity consumption and peak demand from the Integrated Power System. Furthermore, the project serves as a practical benchmark for the mining and heavy-industry sectors with high electricity demand by demonstrating the integrated application of a solar photovoltaic power plant and a battery energy storage system. It also makes a tangible contribution to the implementation of Mongolia’s green development policy, energy transition objectives, and sustainable industrial development goals.
